Earn through your knowledge sharing in Medium.com
One source of passive income with low entry barrier (in a sense that it doesn't bring you any monetary cost for setting up but only time and manpower cost on content creation) is being a contributing writer on Medium - an ad-free blogging and publishing platform. I am no expert as an editor nor copywriter but writing is just my cup of tea and I enjoyed the feeling of having the thoughts flowing naturally when I write! On medium, there is a diverse source of content from writers of different fields where you searched for readings through tags. This way, even if you don't hit the homepage with the most interactions from readers, your piece of writing will still be visible to like-minders or professionals from same academic field. Through the Medium Partner Program, your earnings is based on if the readers are Medium members and the time spent on your articles. Officially, there is no restrictions on the number of posts but the quality and quantity do reflect how established you are in the industry.
So how does posting on Medium help to generate passive income?
A guide for setting up account in less than a few minutes:
- Create an account and join the Medium Partner Program by linking your bank account through Stripe, a third party platform, for future payment. There is a long list of eligible countries served by Stripe, refer here to see if you are among those
- Don't forget to set up the taxpayer information where non-US residents have to fill in the W-8BEN form in order to get paid once there is a steady stream of viewership
- Then, start crafting a niche angle, an informative story and a compelling headline. Do some research through the site with the tag function where you can have a quick glance of what caught the attention of readers most and what topics have already been come across and were considered too cliché. Here're some tips I personally find useful on my first attempt in optimizing your post for a higher reach and click (and of course for passive income)
- For a more complete profile of you and your blog on Medium, work on a description that best illustrates who you are and how you present yourself as a thought leadership in your field. Thoughtfully design a logo that best fits into the circle where reader will see your name next to the logo. If you have no experience in photoshop whatsoever like me, don't worry, Canva is built with design template and simple editing tools to make life easy. Refer here for my profile and logo as an example.
